Parenting Changed Everything — Including How We Shop for Baby

Five years ago, my partner and I were on the brink of something huge: becoming parents for the first time. If you’d peeked into our house back then, you’d have seen a freshly painted nursery, stacks of tiny folded onesies, and a registry that looked like we’d read every “must-have” list on the internet. We honestly thought we were ready.

Spoiler alert: we were not ready. Not even close.

Sure, we had the crib set up, a drawer full of those adorable little socks, and a baby swing that played lullabies on repeat. But then came the sleepless nights. The epic diaper blowouts (why do they always happen in the car?). The realization that “nap when the baby naps” is, frankly, a cruel joke. That’s when the real parenting lessons started.

And let’s be real—I winged it. A lot. Especially as a dad.

We Bought What Looked Good, Not What Worked

Looking back, so much of what we bought was less about what our baby needed and more about what looked cute in photos. That three-piece outfit with the tiny bowtie? Worn once. The fancy toy set? Our kid was obsessed with the box it came in.

It hit us: most of those early purchases weren’t really for the baby. They were for us—to feel prepared, to look like we knew what we were doing.

But if we were really buying for ourselves, why weren’t we picking things that actually made life easier?

We Should Have Focused on the Everyday Tools

What we truly needed wasn’t another matching set of booties. We needed gear that could keep up with us. A stroller that could handle bumpy sidewalks and muddy trails. Bottles that didn’t leak at 2 a.m. A diaper bag that didn’t scream “baby” or fall apart after a few months.

So, we decided to make one ourselves.

Why We Created the Baby Yoyito Day Trip Backpack

The Baby Yoyito Day Trip Backpack was born out of years of real-life parenting. We were tired of bags that only worked for the baby, not for us. This backpack isn’t just for diapers and wipes—it’s got pockets for snacks, water bottles, a change of clothes, and even a tablet or two. It’s built for the whole family.

It’s stylish enough for mom, practical enough for dad, and tough enough to survive toddler meltdowns, airport dashes, and the occasional car-side diaper change.

Think About Yourself When You Build Your Baby Registry

You’re going to use these things every day. You’ll wash them, pack them, and depend on them—sometimes in the middle of the night, half-asleep. So when you’re building your baby registry, ask yourself:

  • Will this actually make life easier at 2 a.m.?

  • Is it going to last longer than a single growth spurt?

  • Is it just cute, or is it genuinely useful?

We wish we’d asked those questions sooner. Now, we hope our experience helps other parents skip the guesswork.

Because let’s face it: parenting is hard enough. If the gear you use every day can bring a little more peace, order, and comfort to your life, it’s worth every penny.
